One of the challenges in making this video, was trying to get good storm with stars shots. The opportunity doesn’t come along very often, the storm has to be moving the right speed and the lightning can overexpose the long exposures. I had several opportunities this summer to get storm and star shots. In one instance, within a minute of picking up the camera and dolly, 70mph winds hit. One storm was perfect, it came straight towards the setup, then died right before it reached it.
Extended cut available here dakotalapse.com/?p=448
At the 1:57 mark a Whitetail buck came in to check out the setup. It was caught on 20 frames, and was there for about 10 minutes. It was only 50 yards from the camera, dolly and light.
At the 3:24 mark, a meteor reflects on the water of the small lake, see still below in Photos. There are also quite a few other meteors in the timelapse.
This was all shot in central South Dakota from June-August.
Canon 5D Mark II for a few shots, Canon 60D and T2i
Canon 16-35, Tokina 11-16
Shot in RAW format. Manual mode, Exposure was 30 seconds on most Milky Way shots, 20-25 on some of the storm shots, ISO 1600 or 3200 F2.8.
Simon Wilkinson at thebluemask.com created the music “Tempest” and sound for it.

I used the Dynamic Perception Stage Zero Dolly on most of the shots as well, it is awesome. dynamicperception.com

Claude Swanson, Ph.D.
Descriptions of the human aura go back thousands of years in Chinese medicine and Hindu yoga. Its existence and general properties are universally acknowledged by energy healers, who say that assessing and manipulating the components of the aura are an integral part of many healing practices. As evidence has mounted in recent years that energy healing works, and is even effective over thousands of miles, yet questions remain: What is the nature of the aura? What is it made of? What role does it play in long range healing?
Dr. Swanson has recently completed a comprehensive study of subtle energy and the role it plays in energy medicine. This is summarized in his new book, Life Force, The Scientific Basis, a comprehensive study of subtle energy. In it, he develops a model based on physics which explains the nature of the aura. It is based on a form of energy called “torsion,” which interacts with particle spins, and was discovered in Russia in the 1950’s. Torsion has undergone extensive verification and is believed by Russian scientists to be the same thing as subtle energy.
Torsion is produced whenever a particle undergoes a spin flip. When absorbed it causes a spin change in the absorbing particle. As a result, it is produced whenever electromagnetic energy is produced. Consequently, the biophoton field inside the body is accompanied by a torsion field which has similar frequency and structure. One difference is that the biophoton field is kept primarily inside the body, while the torsion field extends beyond the body. F.-A. Popp has shown that the biophoton field has phase coherence and other properties needed to create a hologram inside the body. It serves as a template to guide growth and repair processes within the body. Outside the body the torsion field has a similar holographic structure, which creates the layers and chakras described by healers.
According to Russian research, the torsion field has components which travel faster than light as well as a component which travels backwards in time. This has been verified experimentally in astronomical measurements using torsion detectors. These factors, together with its coupling to the biophoton field, make torsion the ideal candidate as the carrier of long distance healing and consciousness information. It explains how healers are able to affect their clients over thousands of miles, as well as how QiGong masters are able to affect physical phenomena at long range. It may also be the underlying “force” which mediates other psychic phenomena, such as ESP, PK and remote viewing.
A method of focusing called “four dimensional holography” is proposed to explain how consciousness phenomena operate over great distances without weakening, and how the effects can be received either earlier or later than the transmission. It explains how QiGong healers can project their influence with pinpoint accuracy and how this force can affect a wide variety of physical phenomena. This model also has application to other effects related to non-local consciousness.
Figure 1. Holographic fields of biophotons, inside body, and torsion field forming aura, outside body.
Dr. Swanson was educated as a physicist at MIT (’69) and received his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University (1976). He has worked as a consultant in applied physics for more than two decades, as well as pursuing research into the physics of anomalous phenomena. His primary interest is in identifying areas of anomaly and developing an expanded physics model which can account for such phenomena. He has written a book, “The Synchronized Universe-New Science of the Paranormal,” summarizing some of his findings.

It has been experimentally demonstrated that cancer mice treated with an orgone energy accumulator (W. Reich and students) lived significantly longer than untreated controls. Recently Bill Bengston experimentally demonstrated that the same strain of cancer mice treated by local healing intention also lived significantly longer than the controls. An examination of the pathophysiology of the mice in both experiments indicates that the treated mice compared to the controls showed marked inflammatory changes at the tumor site. It is postulated that this is the mechanism whereby both the accumulator and intentional healing exert their healing influence and that in some way there is a functional identity in healing and the use of the accumulator.
Richard A. Blasband, M.D., is a psychiatrist in Sausalito, CA who practices psychiatric orgone therapy and healing by mental intention. He is also Research Director of the Center for Functional Research which is devoted to the experimental investigation of the interface between life energy and consciousness. His professional memberships include SSE and the International Consciousness Research Laboratories. He has published over 60 papers on his areas of interest.

An extensive remote-viewing study was conducted at The Farsight Institute in March 2010 to investigate an anomalous high resolution image of Mars that suggests artificiality. The study involves nine highly trained remote viewers across four remote-viewing methodologies, all methodologies of which are directly or indirectly derived from remote-viewing methodologies used by the United States military forces. The image that constitutes the target of the remote viewing suggests that a spray or fountain of liquid is being discharged from a long tubular nozzle, which in turn is connected to an apparent pipeline that leads to a dome formation. There is another larger dome formation nearby that is also part of the target. The remote-viewing sessions are evaluated with respect to verifiable target qualities as determined by the target image. This study notes a high degree of correlation between obvious target characteristics as determined by the target image and the detailed remote-viewing data. In the aggregate, this study offers strong support for the idea that the spray and the two dome formations deviate from known geological processes, and thus may be artificial. The remote-viewing data also shed some light on possible current activities and/or processes that may be taking place at this location on Mars.
Brown, Courtney, Ph.D., is a professor at Emory University who specializes in the application of nonlinear mathematical models to social and political phenomena. Independent of his work as a professor, he is the Director and founder of The Farsight Institute (www.farsight.org), a nonprofit research and educational organization dedicated to the study of nonlocal anomalistic consciousness. He has published a number of books on the subject of remote viewing. Web sites: www.courtneybrown.com www.farsight.org.

The nonlinear effect of observation methodology is one of the most perplexing aspects to modeling non stationary processes. The outcome of an observation depends on the perspective with which the observation is made; in other words, the observed statistical moments depend on the time, location, interval, orientation, sampling methodology, etc…
The lack of well-developed techniques for modeling changing statistical moments in our observations has stymied the application of stochastic process theory for many scientific and engineering applications. These limitations were encountered when modeling temporal effects of calibration frequency on the performance of a radiometer with non stationary receiver fluctuations. In radiometer systems, frequent calibration using noise references is used for reducing the effect of fluctuations in the instrument. Calibration, as it turns out, is key to studying and characterizing non stationary processes. The development of a generalized approach for comparative analysis to modeling radiometer calibration system architectures has led to Ensemble Detection and Analysis (EDA) as a new method for studying and characterizing non stationary processes. Ensemble samples of a process are collected by mixing a signal with calibrated noise.
In stochastic process theory, the ensemble expectation operator is evaluated from an ensemble set of series existing over an interval. Alternatively, a process is treated as a single series of events with each event modeled as a random variable with a conditional probability density function; the process is then described by a Probability State Function (PSF). The mathematical symmetry between the PSF and EDA permits comparison of uncertainty of model and data. Unprecedented agreement is achieved between measurements and model calculations. The mathematical framework gives structure to an Observation Theory that links our expectations to observed outcome. This presentation will describe and explore the applications and implications of the theory.

As it lowers, it is putting the brain/consciousness into deeper and deeper ‘meditative’ states. Once you get to certain frequencies, spiritual experiences begin occurring that are REAL to the person experiencing them. The God Helmet
I want to post this because it shows that magnetic fields have an affect on the brain and spirituality.Note: there is no scientific reference that the Magnetic Ribbon would have an effect like this on the human brain, but it is definitely something to think about, especially those interested in the consciousness shift that is talked about during the 2012 timeframe. – SickScent The term God Helmet refers to an experimental apparatus in neurotheology. The apparatus, placed on the head of an experimental subject, stimulates the brain with fluctuating magnetic fields. Some subjects reported experiences using the same words used to describe spiritual experiences.[1] The leading researcher in this area is Michael Persinger. Persinger uses a modified snowmobile helmet (the “Koren Helmet”) that contains solenoids placed over the temporal lobes, or a device nicknamed the Octopus that uses solenoids, both of which output “weak but complex” magnetic fields. The Octopus uses solenoids around the whole brain, in a circle just above subject’s ears, eyes and the bony ridge at the back of the skull, a region that includes the temporal lobes. Persinger reports that at least 80 percent of his participants (working with the Koren Helmet) experience a presence beside them in the room, which ranges from a simple ‘sensed presence’ to God. About one percent experienced God, while many more had less evocative, but still significant experiences of ‘another being’. The apparatus uses magnetic fields, and not EMF emissions, as is sometimes thought. Much of the controversy surrounding the ‘God Helmet’ is due to this misunderstanding. The distinction is important because alterations in consciousness have been noted during changes in the Earth’s magnetic field (the earth is not a source of EMF emissions, but is a source of magnetic fields), an effect that the ‘God Helmet’ experiments have helped to …more on the God Helmet [link to sickscent.com]Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in, broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, WOW, What a ride!

I believe sound, along with magnetic fields, are also linked to this. Music and language alike can also create anxiety, and stress or peace and relaxation. In fact I believe sound/vibrations is the language or code of the Universe. I don’t know if this is completely related to what you are saying, but since you are talking frequencies and vibrations, I thought I’d add it in. I just want to go home.

I read somewhere, though I’ve forgotten where, that when the astronauts went to the moon (outside earth’s belts) they had to make a false resonant field in order to keep them grounded.Anyone hear about this?

I thought ‘ascendance’ was correlated with higher frequencies, not lower?Have you been reading Hameroff? He talks about quantum process in the microtubules of the brain creating consciousness and talks about frames of consciousness occuring 40 times/sec or every 25 ms = 40/sec.
Does 40 x/sec correspond to 40 Hz?? Enigmatic features of consciousness and their explanation by conventional approaches and Orch OR Enigmatic Feature of Consciousness — Unitary binding, e.g., in vision, “self” In our model, microtubule-associated proteins “tune” the quantum oscillations leading to OR; we thus term the process “orchestrated objective reduction” (Orch OR). Perhaps a range of tones or frequencies being played simultaneously at certain hz. I wish I had a machine that could do this. My friend has a frequency generator for testing electronics, maybe if you fired a bunch of those up at once on different frequencies you could tap in to other states. However I suppose it could be potentially harmful as well. I just want to go home.

Hey if I can get it anyone can; it just takes time and reading a lot of articles on electromagnetics. First, familiarize yourself with how magnets work; next find out the basics of electricity; now learn how there is a “pulse”…a vibration…in all forms of energy. Everything we know has some type of energy. The different tones, sounds, electromagnetism affect energy in different ways. I’m sure others can explain it better but this is the basics I’m working with. Great thread Sickscent, glad it caught my eye before I logged off so I started reading from the start and not 6 pages later.

Re: Spiritual Rapture, Dream States, Creative Insurges – Schumann Resonance and the Natural Frequencies of the Human Brain…and the Incoming
Want more? There is a subject in my work that concerns a sustained plasma event due to being submerged in the magnetic/plasma field that is incoming. What if it has an effect on our consciousness as well? What if this theory below is true, and we experience a sustained consciousness field between humans when submerged in this magnetic ribbon field? A COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUS EVENT! Check out this theory. It is called the CEMI Theory, the electromagnetic field theory of consciousness. CEMI Theory McFadden thinks that the EM field could influence the brain in a number of ways. Redistribution of ions could modulate neuronal activity, given that voltage-gated ion channels are a key element in the progress of axon spikes. Neuronal firing is argued to be sensitive to the variation of as little as one millivolt across the cell membrane, or the involvement of a single extra ion channel. Transcranial magnetic stimulation is similarly argued to have demonstrated that weak EM fields can influence brain activity. McFadden proposes that the digital information from neurons is integrated to form a conscious electromagnetic information (cemi) field in the brain. Consciousness is suggested to be the component of this field that is transmitted back to neurons, and communicates its state externally. Thoughts are viewed as electromagnetic representations of neuronal information, and the experience of freewill in our choice of actions is argued to be our subjective experience of the cemi field acting on our neurons. McFadden’s view of freewill is deterministic. Neurons generate patterns in the EM field, which in turn modulate the firing of particular neurons. There is only conscious agency in the sense that the field or its download to neurons is conscious, but the processes of the brain themselves are driven by deterministic electromagnetic interactions. The feel of subjective experience or qualia corresponds to a particular configuration of the cemi field. This field representation is in this theory argued to integrate parts into a whole that has meaning, so a face is not seen as a random collection of features, but as somebody’s face. The integration of information in the field is also suggested to resolve the binding problem. Susan Pockett[8] has advanced a theory, which has a similar physical basis to McFadden’s, with consciousness seen as identical to certain spatiotemporal patterns of the EM field. However, whereas McFadden argues that his deterministic interpretation of the EM field is not out-of-line with mainstream thinking, Pockett suggests that the EM field comprises a universal consciousness that experiences the sensations, perceptions, thoughts and emotions of every conscious being in the universe. However, while McFadden thinks that the field is causal for actions, albeit deterministically, Pockett does not see the field as causal for our actions. This is an exciting concept, but I wonder how much control we humans would have of our concious minds and actions in these circumstances for taking care of routine mundane daily activities. Would we be functional in such a dream state? Or zoned out to the point of allowing major disasters to occur?BTW,I have used several brain wave altering machines and have found them to be a positive thing and very relaxing. I just don’t know about being in that state all the time with it out of my control.

I was just talking to others the other day as to when was the last test done on the brain % we use now a days? The only one I can recall with out searching would be when they tested Einsteins to be some where around 11-12% I think. As the common human uses 10%. Seems a waste?Maybe this 10% = 10hz and with a little overclocking, one could boost there system to 11-12% on air, With out the need for a liquid cooled alum. foil hat mod.
This incoming fluff would be like turning on the lights/ similar to one booting there computer with a fully functional CMOS or COS-MOS? |

Citizens for Legitimate Government, http://www.legitgov.org/ (CLG) calls for protest – SEIZE DC!

Why SEIZE DC?
Endless, illegal, murderous and bankrupting war abroad; endless, brutal and bankrupting attacks on the vast majority at home—this is what we protest.
Ten years ago, with the illegitimate installation of Bush as “president,” Citizens for Legitimate Government made it its mission to expose the coup and to oppose the Bush occupation of the White House. We predicted that the installation of Bush was merely the precursor to an era of illegal and undemocratic undertakings on the part of the U.S. government–policies that had begun at home and that would extend across the globe. Unfortunately, we were right. And we were right to say that this era would not and has not ended with Obama. In fact, it continued unabated and gained in intensity.
In 2008, we witnessed a supposed change of guard with the election of Barack Obama. But even before the election took place, we suggested that Obama, rather than being an agent for change, was in fact a cleverly constructed mirage to enable the financial, corporate and military oligarchy to continue on the same course, in fact, to do so with without the degree of opposition that was building to the Bush regime. What we have witnessed is not ‘change you can believe in,’ but, where Obama and most Democrats in Congress are concerned, belief you can change.
From Bush to Obama, we have seen not a change in policies, not a reversal, not even a ‘failing’ to change course, but the exact opposite: a determined continuation, extension and increase of the very same policies.
Rather than an end to imperialist wars, we have witnessed the increase in scope and the extension of war into other countries. Rather than two wars, we now have four.
Rather than policies favouring ‘Main Street’ as promised, we have witnessed the unprecedented transfer of wealth into the coffers of the banks, corporations and military contractors. We have seen record corporate profits while social misery for the working classes continues to rise, with unemployment not seen since the Great Depression and record home foreclosures. We now have austerity imposed on the vast majority while those who caused the financial crisis with wars, bailouts and corruption, pay little or no taxes and enjoy record profits.
Instead of restoring civil liberties, we have seen their further erosion with the extension of the Patriot Act, the increase of surveillance on the web, and a declaration by the president of the right to assassinate American citizens without any legal sanction whatsoever.
Indefinite detentions have not only continued under Obama, but he has also made sure that proven innocence is no cause for release.
This is but a short summary of the reasons for SEIZE DC!
How to SEIZE DC?
We protest “peacefully,” although not passively. We do not accept marching orders. This is how we protest.
For 10 years, we have witnessed the absolute formalization of protests—the seeking of permits, the placing in quarantined zones, the appropriation of ‘free speech’ and the pro forma ‘right to dissent,’ treated as a purely formal and meaningless expression. We say, enough! We need no permission to free speech or the right of assembly. We seek no one’s permission and will not have our protest cordoned off from and made irrelevant to the functioning of a murderous and tyrannical oligarchy. We will not be corralled or controlled. Our protest is a seizure of DC, by which we mean an attempt to seize the attention of the city and the nation so that its policies of seize and destroy may end.
More details on the protest schedule to follow soon.

As many people already know the commonly used sodium fluoride is extremely toxic, and contrary to most “medical professionals” it is not good for the human body.
But if you have become health conscious and stopped drinking fluoridated water, your good right? Yes and No.
If you were raised in a community that fluoridates the water, it has built up in your system. Sodium fluoride is an accumulative poison. If you are like me, born and raised in a fluoridated city, it has built up in your body. Mainly in your bones, thyroid glad, and pineal gland. So how do you get that fluoride out of your system?
That is a very complicated question. There is no 100% verified method of totally detoxing fluorides from your body. But there is several methods that I have used (along with many others), that can make a huge difference. For example: Joint pain disappearing, Chronic headaches gone, an ability to think clearer, and weight loss.
Third, getting enough sunlight daily plays a large role in detoxing the pineal gland. As well as getting enough time in the dark. Sounds strange I know. But the right balance of light and darkness helps to regulate the melatonin production (the main function of the pineal gland).
Fourth is getting enough exercise (which also helps regulate melatonin production). And fifth is doing a raw liver detox. The raw detox is were most people cringe and get turned away. But it is very simple and effective. All that you need to do is drink two cups of tea a day, cut back on preserved foods, and increase your intake of raw foods. Here is the tea recipe that I use:
* 1 thick slice of lemon
* 1 piece of fresh ginger, 2/3? long, peeled and bruised
* 1 cup boiling water
Place lemon and ginger in cup. Add boiling water and leave to infuse for two minutes. Remove lemon and ginger and drink immediately.

In the article entitled Dumbing Down Society Pt I: Foods, Beverages and Meds, I wrote that fluoride was a toxic chemical that caused the deterioration of cognitive functions when ingested. In other words, swallowing fluoride makes you dumber. Despite the fact that some communities have recently managed to gather enough support to get their cities to stop water fluoridation (see Pinellas County in Florida), millions of people are still unaware of the dangers of fluoride and still consume great amounts of it.
In this video, a dentist describes the brain numbing effects of fluoride when consumed in unhealthy doses.

Plains Milky Way from Randy Halverson on Vimeo.
During the month of May, I shot Milky Way timelapse in central South Dakota, when I had the time, and the weather cooperated. The biggest challenge was cloudy nights and the wind. There were very few nights, when I could shoot, that were perfectly clear, and often the wind was blowing 25mph +. That made it hard to get the shots I wanted. I kept most of the shots low to the ground, so the wind wouldn’t catch the setup and cause camera shake, or blow it over. I used a Stage Zero Dolly on the dolly shots and a “Milapse” mount on the panning ones.
This was all shot at night. If you see stars and it looks like daylight, it is actually moon light. 20+ second exposures make it look like daylight.

A pigeon performing a math test. When the bird pecks a shape, a box appears around it.
By now, the intelligence of birds is well known. Alex the African gray parrot had great verbal skills. Scrub jays, which hide caches of seeds and other food, have remarkable memories. And New Caledonian crows make and use tools in ways that would put the average home plumber to shame.
The birds learned to rank shapes (the ones on the screens are simulated).
Pigeons, it turns out, are no slouches either. It was known that they could count. But all sorts of animals, including bees, can count. Pigeons have now shown that they can learn abstract rules about numbers, an ability that until now had been demonstrated only in primates. In the 1990s scientists trained rhesus monkeys to look at groups of items on a screen and to rank them from the lowest number of items to the highest.
They learned to rank groups of one, two and three items in various sizes and shapes. When tested, they were able to do the task even when unfamiliar numbers of things were introduced. In other words, having learned that two was more than one and three more than two, they could also figure out that five was more than two, or eight more than six.
Damian Scarf, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Otago, in New Zealand, tried the same experiment with pigeons, and he and two colleagues report in the current issue of the journal Science that the pigeons did just as well as the monkeys.
Elizabeth Brannon, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke University, and one of the scientists who did the original experiments with monkeys, was impressed by the new results. “Their performance looks just like the monkeys’,” she said.
Score one for the birds. The pigeons had learned an abstract rule: peck images on a screen in order, lower numbers to higher. It may have taken a year of training, with different shapes, sizes and colors of items, always in groups of one, two or three, but all that work paid off when it was time for higher math.
Given groups of six and nine, they could pick, or peck, the images in the right order. This is one more bit of evidence of how smart birds really are, and it is intriguing because the pigeons’ performance was so similar to the monkeys’. “I was surprised,” Dr. Scarf said.
He and his colleagues wrote that the common ability to learn rules about numbers is an example either of different groups — birds and primates, in this case — evolving these abilities separately, or of both pigeons and primates using an ability that was already present in their last common ancestor.
That would really be something, because the common ancestor of pigeons and primates would have been alive around 300 million years ago, before dinosaurs and mammals. It may be that counting was already important, but Dr. Scarf said that if he had to guess, he would lean toward the idea that the numerical ability he tested evolved separately. “I can definitely see why both monkeys and pigeons could profit from this ability,” he said.
No testing has been done with numbers greater than nine, so whether a pigeon can count large numbers of bread crumbs or popcorn kernels is a question still open to investigation.

The vast Nullarbor Plain is the world’s largest limestone karst landscape covering an area of 270,000 square km, extending 2,000 km between Norseman and Ceduna. Two thirds of the Nullarbor is within Western Australia and one third is in South Australia.
The spectacular Bunda Cliffs and the Great Australian Bight border the area to the south and the northern border is the Great Victoria Desert.
The name Nullarbor derives from “no trees”, but the plain is covered with bluebush and saltbush plants, hardy shrubs that are drought-resistant and salt-tolerant. The outer edges of the Nullarbor house open woodlands of Myall acacias.
The 1984 Biological Survey of the Nullarbor identified:
– 794 vascular plant species
– 56 mammals – with one of Australia’s largest populations of southern hairy-nosed wombats
– 249 bird species – including the endemic Nullarbor Quail and Nareth Blue Bonnet
– 86 reptile species and 1 frog – Within the study areas a large number of new records and range extensions were recorded

Where has your PNR data gone? (click image for larger version or here for details)
The U.S. government has filed its initial answer to our lawsuit against U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for illegally withholding records of its travel surveillance system, and an initial procedural hearing in the case has been scheduled for Thursday, January 6, 2011, at 10 a.m. in San Francisco.
But if the government’s claims are true, the implications of some of them are shocking. In particular, they claim that, “Plaintiff was provided all documents that he is entitled to by law,” even though — like everyone else who has requested their records from the “Automated Targeting System” (ATS) — we have never received anything that was even claimed to be in response to my request for the “accounting of disclosures” required by the Privacy Act. Nor did we receive anything which was even claimed to be the “risk assessments” made of me, or the rules for determining those risk assessments, both of which were mentioned in CBP’s years-belated official notice of the contents of the ATS.
In other words, the government is claiming in answer to our lawsuit that nobody — not even U.S. citizens — has any legal entitlement to know what other government agencies or third parties have received their travel records including PNR’s from CBP, what “risk” scores (used to decide whether to allow us to fly, or how to treat us) have been assigned to us, or how those scores have been generated.
So much for any pretense of transparency, accountability, or access rights. Nobody has any right to know who has gotten our PNRs, or how they are being used against us.
The initial “case management conference” will be our first chance to meet the government’s lawyers and the judge to which the case has been assigned, Judge Richard Seeborg of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. We expect it to be brief, and to be solely concerned with setting a schedule for filing of preliminary motions. But it will be open to the press and the public, and you are welcome to attend.
The hearing will be on Thursday, January 6, 2011, at 10 a.m. in Courtroom 3 on the 17th floor of the Phillip Burton Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, 450 Golden Gate Ave. (between Polk and Larkin, near Civic Center), in San Francisco.
More information including links to news reports are in our FAQ about the case.
We are all here to become better prepared for all disasters of every kind, be they natural or otherwise. We can each contribute information to share with the other members of this group pertaining to ways we can deal with particular situations that may arise due to unforeseen and unexpected events that could come to pass in the future. Everyone is encouraged to share information and ask any questions concerning preparedness. That is what this group is all about. So let’s get to it. ALWAYS BE PREPARED! ~TW

Online gamers have achieved a feat beyond the realm of Second Life or Dungeons and Dragons: they have deciphered the structure of an enzyme of an AIDS-like virus that had thwarted scientists for a decade.
Photo by AFPThe exploit is published on Sunday in the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, where — exceptionally in scientific publishing — both gamers and researchers are honoured as co-authors.
Their target was a monomeric protease enzyme, a cutting agent in the complex molecular tailoring of retroviruses, a family that includes HIV.
Figuring out the structure of proteins is vital for understanding the causes of many diseases and developing drugs to block them.
But a microscope gives only a flat image of what to the outsider looks like a plate of one-dimensional scrunched-up spaghetti. Pharmacologists, though, need a 3-D picture that “unfolds” the molecule and rotates it in order to reveal potential targets for drugs.
This is where Foldit comes in.
Developed in 2008 by the University of Washington, it is a fun-for-purpose video game in which gamers, divided into competing groups, compete to unfold chains of amino acids — the building blocks of proteins — using a set of online tools.
To the astonishment of the scientists, the gamers produced an accurate model of the enzyme in just three weeks.
Cracking the enzyme “provides new insights for the design of antiretroviral drugs,” says the study, referring to the lifeline medication against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
It is believed to be the first time that gamers have resolved a long-standing scientific problem.
“We wanted to see if human intuition could succeed where automated methods had failed,” Firas Khatib of the university’s biochemistry lab said in a press release. “The ingenuity of game players is a formidable force that, if properly directed, can be used to solve a wide range of scientific problems.”
One of Foldit’s creators, Seth Cooper, explained why gamers had succeeded where computers had failed.
“People have spatial reasoning skills, something computers are not yet good at,” he said.
“Games provide a framework for bringing together the strengths of computers and humans. The results in this week’s paper show that gaming, science and computation can be combined to make advances that were not possible before.”

NEW YORK, June 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — “The prolonged ingestion of fluoride may cause significant damage to health and particularly to the nervous system,” concludes a review of studies by researchers Valdez-Jimenez, et al. published in Neurologia(June 2011), reports New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc. (NYSCOF).
The research team reports, “It is important to be aware of this serious problem and avoid the use of toothpaste and items that contain fluoride, particularly in children as they are more susceptible to the toxic effects of fluoride.” (1)
“Fluoride can be toxic by ingesting one part per million (ppm), and the effects are not immediate, as they can take 20 years or more to become evident,” they write.
Most fluoridating U.S. public drinking water suppliers add fluoride chemicals to deliver 1 ppm fluoride (equal to about 1 milligram per quart) intending to benefit teeth and not to purify the water.
“Fluoridation clearly jeopardizes our children and must be stopped,” says attorney Paul Beeber, President, NYSCOF. “We can actually see how fluoride has damaged children’s teeth with dental fluorosis; but we can’t see the harm it’s doing to their brains and other organs. No U.S. researcher is even looking,” says Beeber.
Valdez-Jimenez, et al. describe studies that show fluoride induces changes in the brain’s physical structure and biochemistry which affects the neurological and mental development of individuals including cognitive processes, such as learning and memory.
“Fluoride is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, which may cause biochemical and functional changes in the nervous system during pregnancy, since the fluoride accumulates in brain tissue before birth,” they write.*
Animal studies show fluoride’s toxic brain effects include classic brain abnormalities found in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, Valdez-Jimenez’s team reports.
A different research team (Tang et al.) reported in 2008 that “A qualitative review of the studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ.” (Biological Trace Element Research) (2)
In 2006, the U.S. National Research Council’s (NRC) expert fluoride panel reviewed fluoride toxicology and concluded, “It’s apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain.” And, “Fluorides also increase the production of free radicals in the brain through several different biological pathways. These changes have a bearing on the possibility that fluorides act to increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.” (3)
On April 12, 2010, Time magazine listed fluoride as one of the “Top Ten Common Household Toxins” and described fluoride as both “neurotoxic and potentially tumorigenic if swallowed.” (4)
Phyllis Mullenix, Ph.D., was the first U.S. scientist to find evidence that fluoride damages the brain. She published her animal study in a respected peer-reviewed scientific journal in 1995 (5) and then was fired for doing so.(6)
Vyvyan Howard, M.D., Ph.D., a prominent fetal toxicologist and past-President of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment, said that current brain/fluoride research convinces him that we should stop water fluoridation.
Many communities have stopped or rejected fluoridation in the past several years – the most recent is Fairbanks, Alaska. This year, seven New York City Council Members co-sponsored legislation to stop fluoridation in NYC.
